Premium G4Si1 MIG Welding Wire for Mild Steel

G4Si1 is a copper-coated solid MIG welding wire containing silicon and manganese as deoxidizers. It's specifically formulated for welding mild steel and low-carbon steel applications. The wire is ideal for automotive components, structural fabrication, sheet metal work, general manufacturing, and repair welding where clean, strong welds on mild steel are required.

Wire diameter selection depends on material thickness and welding position. For thin materials (0.5-3mm), use 0.8mm wire. For medium thickness (3-6mm), 1.0mm is optimal. For thicker materials (6mm+), choose 1.2mm wire. Vertical and overhead welding typically benefit from smaller diameters for better control. G4Si1 wire performs best with Ar/CO2 gas mixtures. For general applications, use 80% Argon / 20% CO2 for smooth arc and minimal spatter. Pure CO2 is economical for thick sections but produces more spatter. For critical applications requiring superior finish, consider 90% Argon / 10% CO2. Gas flow rate should typically be 12-15 liters per minute.

Ensure proper drive roll tension—tight enough to feed consistently but not so tight that it deforms the wire. Use the correct drive roll groove size for your wire diameter. Keep the liner clean and properly trimmed. Maintain straight conduit routing without sharp bends. Replace contact tips when worn. Store wire in dry conditions to prevent rust on the copper coating that can cause feeding issues.

Excessive spatter typically results from incorrect voltage/wire feed speed settings, contaminated base material, or improper gas coverage. Ensure clean, rust-free base metal. Verify shielding gas flow rate (12-15 L/min) and check for gas leaks. Adjust voltage incrementally—too low causes stubbing, too high causes excessive spatter. Match wire feed speed to voltage settings per manufacturer guidelines.

Store wire in its original packaging in a dry environment to prevent moisture absorption and copper coating oxidation. Avoid areas with temperature extremes or direct sunlight. Once opened, protect partially used spools with plastic covers. If wire shows rust spots or feeding becomes difficult, surface contamination has occurred. Proper storage extends wire shelf life and maintains consistent welding performance.

Starting parameters vary by wire diameter and material thickness. For 1.0mm wire on 3mm mild steel: voltage 19-21V, wire feed speed 4-6 m/min. For 0.8mm wire on thin sheet: voltage 17-19V, wire feed speed 3-5 m/min. Always start at lower settings and increase incrementally until achieving proper penetration and bead appearance. While G4Si1 can weld through light zinc coatings or paint, best practice is removing these contaminants before welding. Galvanized coatings produce zinc fumes (health hazard) and porosity. Paint causes contamination and weak welds. If welding coated material is unavoidable, use adequate ventilation, increase voltage slightly, and reduce travel speed. For critical applications, always remove coatings mechanically or chemically before welding.
